Gettysburg Combined Area Resources for Emergency Shelter (C.A.R.E.S)

Gettysburg C.A.R.E.S. mission is to provide emergency shelter for up to 30 people when no other shelter is available. We serve men, women and families in need.

In 2012, several local churches and community members came together to prevent unsheltered guests from freezing during the winter months. Over the years, we’ve been blessed to grow with the support of additional churches, local organizations and volunteers allowing us to expand our service to better meet the needs of our clients.

For the third consecutive year, St. James Lutheran Church has graciously provided its third floor to house our overnight guests. Our clients receive breakfast prepared by volunteers next door at The Youth House and may visit our Resource Center during the day

The Resource Center, led by a full-time director and supported by dedicated staff, helps guests find housing, access additional services and pursue employments opportunities. Guest can also shower, prepare light meals, do laundry and use computers. Paid overnight staff ensure a safe and welcoming environment each night.

As we begin out 13th year of providing emergency winter shelter, the staff, the Board of Directors and the guest thank you for caring about the unsheltered members of our community. We are very graceful and blessed to have so many people and organization who want to help improve the lives of our homeless neighbors. The shelfter season runs from November through mid-April, and our primary goal remains the same - to keep people safe from the cold while supporting them on their journey back into stable housing and the community.
